Città Commercial:
Project feature of Dorrington Atcheson Architects’ Kingfisher

Dorrington Atcheson Architects (DAA) recently completed their ‘Kingfisher’ project, overlooking the tranquil upper inlet of the Waitematā Harbour. The attentively designed home embraces its unique site with uninterrupted views of the sea and bush-like surrounds.

Once the project came together, DAA reached out to us to help with the final styling touches. Our furniture and textiles effortlessly complemented the beautiful build, celebrating the capabilities of our extensive collections.

Emma-Jane Hetherington of DAA shares some of the project features below.

Set back from the road, the house’s street façade gives little away on approach. The two half gables are intentionally windowless on this side adding intrigue. The entry is an expanse of glass, interrupted by a large timber door. This gallery-like space allows a view directly through the house to the water beyond and the stairs are a dramatic feature as one enters.

The house pivots around a central courtyard set about a mature Ginkgo tree. Like the water view, the tree and green space surrounding it are viewed from most areas of the house and are integral to the design.

The second-floor spaces are smaller and generally more private, providing bedrooms and bathrooms. These rooms take advantage of the roof forms, ensuring soaring stud heights and, in turn, generous amounts of glass.

It received a housing award in NZIA’s Auckland Architecture Awards 2023. The judges praised the design as a “down-to-earth home that responds superbly to its context”.

It was a pleasure to help DAA style the house with our furniture and textiles. Moving through the house, our Compound sideboard finds its home beneath the dramatic staircase. As you step down to the dining area, our generously sized dark oak Tatamu table is paired with Aspen dining chairs.

The striking living room is styled with our Aiko sofa, adorned with a selection of cushion covers. The sofa works in harmony with the sunken floor feature and wood-burning fireplace. Our sofas are custom-made to order, allowing you to create a seating solution tailored to your space and style.

The finishing touches can be seen with our warming throws, tactile cushion covers, and considered art pieces.

We look forward to continuing to enhance projects with our award-winning furniture, lighting, and textiles. Discover how we can work with you to create something truly special. Drop by our commercial showroom in Mt Eden or get in touch below.
