Behind the design: our Waffle wool blankets

We’re excited to expand our range of New Zealand-made wool blankets to include two bold waffle designs.

From start to finish, the design tells a New Zealand story. The newly released blankets are designed in our Auckland studio by our in-house designer, Imogen Tunnicliffe. The blankets are then woven and milled by a local manufacturer using New Zealand lambswool.

During the design journey, Imogen was inspired by nostalgic memories of winter days spent at a family bach.

“When designing these blankets, my mind went back to stormy days at the beach. Everyone was wrapped up in a blanket, one way or another, with each blanket a different pattern, colour or texture,” says Imogen.

“I can picture us playing board games, listening to Split Enz, watching the rain lash at the windows, and the wind whip up the sea.”

It is the first time we’ve showcased a waffle technique across our New Zealand-made blankets.

The weave creates raised ridged squares that form a regular grid pattern, resembling pancake waffles or honeycomb—as it is also known.

To the eye, the distinctive three-dimensional weave looks quite solid and structured. However, the technique creates a blanket that is beautifully soft and comparably lightweight.

There are two brightly-hued blankets available. The multi-coloured oversize plaid explores the interaction of colour. Harmonious and contrasting colours interact to create a united, playful design. Alternatively, the orange peel/honey colourway has a sunny and retro aesthetic.

The versatile, generously sized blankets are a must-have for all seasons. Use it as an extra layer on your sofa and bed. When venturing outdoors, it can be adapted as a picnic rug or warming camping blanket.

Both designs are available in-store and online now.
